2. Overhead Valve (OHV) Cylinder Head Type
This type of cylinder head is very popular and has been for decades. It is also known by the I-type cylinder heads and features a complicated construction. The OHV head contains the component of the flatbed type. It also houses the spark plugs, and passageways for intake- and exhaust gasses.
Because of the placement of valves and intake passages in the engine, OHV cylinder heads produce higher performance. The improved design of the paths makes intake gases flow more quickly and smoothly. The head is also less hot than the flathead.
The design of the OHV heads for cylinder heads brings the camshaft closer to the crankshaft. This arrangement simplifies and improves the drive system. This arrangement improves the engine’s performance.
3. Overhead Camshaft (Ohc) Cylinder Head Type
OHC is the abbreviation for overhead cylinder heads. This is because of its unique design. The head contains the valvetrain parts, sparkplugs, intake and exhaust ports, as well as the camshaft.
The camshaft position in the cylinder heads can vary. It can be located in the middle, between each row of valves, or on top. OHC cylinder heads come in a single, or dual configuration. The single OHC type uses a single camshaft to operate the intake and exhaust valves.
Two separate camshafts are required for the valves in a dual OHC head. The cost of making single- or SOHC heads is less than those made from double or DOHC heads. But, DOHC heads provide better performance. In situations where performance may be a requirement, cylinder head manufacturers might prefer such heads.
